Extend The Life of Fresh Herbs and Vegetables

To extend the life of herbs, you can store them in a water filled glass jar with a plastic bag over the herbs.  After a week of keeping my parsley stored this way, it looked exactly the same as when I first bought it. Certain vegetables should be stored on the counter instead of the refrigerator. These include ginger, garlic, onions and tomatoes and bananas.  These items do not do well with moisture and cold temperatures.  Tomatoes will lose its flavor in the refrigerator. Bananas will ripen quicker if left as a bunch.  If you want to slow down the ripening, pull them apart and store them so they are not touching.

Pay attention to how grocery stores store their produce and follow their lead. The herbs are in the refrigerated section, the potatoes are kept at room temperature.

If you wash produce and leave it out, it can grow mold. Wait to wash fruits and vegetables until you eat or cook them or wash them and store them with a paper towel to soak up extra water.
